Multiple Translations

A way to compare many different translations of the same poem.

Composite features one poem in each issue. The poem in its original language is printed on a page that folds out from the back cover. Inside, various translations of the poem into English or other languages be printed together.

- The composite sketch made from interviews with various near-sighted witnesses with imperfect memories. Together these descriptions and sketches may help to catch the wanted criminal.

- A complex material in which two or more distinct, structurally complementary substances combine to produce some structural or functional properites not present in any individual component.

- A weed, an aster, wormwood, a dandelion, a thistle (said to be the favorite food of donkeys).

Send your translations!

Issue #1 features translations of "Recueillement" by Charles Baudelaire. In the printed issue, there are 12 different translations by 11 different translators, one of them non-human. Here you can see more details of the issue and some extra translations by Jack Foley and whoever else sends me more fuel for the fire.

Issue #2 features translations of a poem by Juana de Ibarbourou: "Fusión". Try your hand at untangling the knots if you dare.

- ?? Any style of translation is fine. Just give it your best shot, or maybe take some risks and amuse me - and the other readers. Translate it into a rap song, translate it into Papimiento, Quenya, or Morse code.

If you want to include an explanation of your translation or your translation process, or a brief bio, that might make it into the journal too. But it's not a requirement. Let me know if it is ok to put your email address or other contact information into the zine.

The deadline for submissions is Jul. 7th, 2005.
